Nate: Cory and I met in Bath, Maine, as interns working for Bath Iron Works. Both being “non-Mainers”, we were excited to explore the area and found ourselves in the same friend group quickly. But… we didn’t really talk much until the last weekend. Us plus two others were planning on a road trip to mid-Maine with hopes to spot a Moose and have a sendoff. At the last minute one got sick, and the other had to stay back for family, so it was just going to be the two of us and we weren't sure if we should just cancel the trip all together.
Cory: We both realized that this was our last opportunity to explore Maine so we went on the trip even though the others couldn't come, quieting the concerns of awkwardness with the new arrangement. Though we didn't end up finding any moose, we began to form a stronger friendship through the hours together and were able to see a sliver of central Maine that we would otherwise might have never seen.
At the end of the summer we started dating as we went our separate ways back to school. We talked every night, sent letters and made monthly visits to each other’s college until we could continue our lives together in Texas.
Nate: We had been together for 5 years, and I was traveling to the Netherlands for a work trip. We decided to take a week of vacation at the end of the work trip to travel to Greece, where Cory would meet me. To date most of our best memories have been traveling together and this trip seemed like the perfect time to ask. We walked along the sea in Athens on the first day and at sunset, I asked Cory to marry me. She was not surprised, but for the first time she have a response ready, and after saying yes, the next question was “what’s next”? Then like most people, we went to go get cherry chip gelato.
Cory: Nate claims I asked “what’s next” after the proposal but I don’t remember that! Not exactly the most elengent response but let me highlight that my question may have led to that cherry chip gelato, which I do recall. We took the bus back to the hotel in Athens and after a few days, traveled by boat to Santorini where we had the best honey of our lives. It was so wonderful that we exited our naturally introverted selves and tried to procure some the next day but sadly it was a single batch, destined to live in our memories.
